Charleston - Always worth a trip

Located directly on the ocean and with an average annual temperature of 24 degrees Celsius or 75 degrees Fahrenheit, it's no wonder that Charleston is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the U.S. East Coast. However, you won't find skyscrapers like those in so many other big cities. Instead, a glance at the skyline reveals dozens of church spires. The large number of houses of worship is said to be one of the reasons why Charleston is called "The Holy City."

Between containers and culture

Charleston is not a classic industrial city with factories and smokestacks. The city's big economic engine is its seaport, which is one of the most important on the U.S. East Coast. Even more important for the city, however, is tourism. Charleston is known for its unique culture, which blends elements from the southern states, England, France and West Africa. The absolute highlight of the calendar is the Spoleto Festival, which takes place every spring. It is considered one of the most important art festivals in the U.S. For 17 days, the city becomes a stage for artists from the fields of opera, theater, classical music and jazz. Also popular with tourists are the well-preserved historic city center and the "Charleston Museum," the oldest museum in the United States. In the middle of the 18th century, the first theater in the United States was opened here. Today, you can still catch a performance at the Dock Street Theatre.
